After Dinner Story

G.’s father was a natural philosopher.

All would gather round to listen to him.

One story lingers in my mind as does

that long ago night sitting under

summer stars. Something was filmy, fragile

in the tale, something barely articulated,

too hard to repeat, too hard to forget.

He spoke to an owl’s hooting —

Somewhere over the moonlit fields . . . who knows

when, what night in my youth, I was travelling

in a wagon, who knows where, I cannot

remember anything but this,

a wren or titmouse followed me chittering

in a language it seemed I half understood,

at times circling, at times preceding, leading

me into the deepening dusk . . .
